We’ve had a few new members complete their first few classes this week.
I remember my first week at CrossFit: I was hungry and tired!
For most people, CrossFit is an entirely new way of training and it takes a while for the body to adapt. Adaptation requires food and sleep so it was no wonder I felt like that!
The trouble is, it can become so easy to forget any other movement.
Your hour at the gym is so intense that mentally you’ve ticked that box and physically your body kicks into survival and encourages you to rest for the remainder of the day.
But, and I hate to be the one to say it, one hour out of 24 isn’t really enough.
You see, purposeful exercise only accounts for around 10-20% of your daily calorie burn. The remainder will come from your BMR (that’s how much energy you need to just stay alive) and NEAT which stands for Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. Basically, all the other stuff you do throughout the day from blinking to going upstairs.
If we forget to keep up the NEAT, then we kind of negate the hour we spent at the gym anyway!
And it’s not just about the calorie burn: moving keeps us mobile and healthy and able to perform simple tasks into later life.
Human bodies were designed to run, jump and generally move throughout the day as we hunt for food and travel for water. If your goal is weight loss, general fitness or health improvements then you’ve got to fight that natural instinct and keep moving! It doesn’t have to be intense, but it should be more than sitting in front of Netflix! Some light yoga, walking or generally staying active throughout the day is perfect. (I like to combine yoga with Netflix) How will you stay active this week?
